Randy Berholtz is a Sr. Fund Advisor and Fund Counsel with Mesa Verde and a Member of the Investment Committee. Mr. Berholtz has over 24 years of experience as a venture capital, securities, private and public financing, mergers and acquisitions, intellectual property, intellectual property litigation and regulatory lawyer in the life sciences including over 14 years as the general counsel to three public life science companies in San Diego (Nanogen, Inc., Apricus Biosciences, Inc., and Innovus Pharmaceuticals, Inc.) and to one group of US and Chinese life science companies in San Diego and Hangzhou, China (the ACON Group). He has also served as the Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel to IngleWood Ventures, L.P. and has held roles as a general partner, venture partner, advisor and consultant to a number of life science venture capital firms. He was also a member of the San Diego Tech Coast Angels (BioMedTRak Group) and the Life Science Angels. He is currently on the Board of Directors of Strategic Drug Solutions, Inc., the first spin-out company from the Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California and has been on the board of directors of four other life science companies. He is a past Adjunct Professor at the Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences at the Claremont Colleges and a past Lecturer at the Rady School of Business at the University of California, San Diego. Randy has his BA from Cornell University in political economy, his M.Litt from Oxford University where he was a Rhodes Scholar, his J.D. from the Yale Law School and is expected to receive his MBA (2016) from the University of San Diego.

 

Sam Ellis is an entrepreneur, business leader, investor, biochemist and molecular biologist who has worked in the biotechnology industry for over 20 years. He is a member of Tech Coast Angels and Life Science Angels, and serves on multiple privately held company boards.

Sam serves on January Therapeutics board, and has led a successful seed round fundraising. He has successfully grown multiple businesses including Thomson Instrument Company and is listed as inventor on more than 43+ patents.   In his career Sam has successfully closed more than 100 deals in biotechnology-focused partnerships with large pharma, small pharma, academic, and government entities while at Thomson.  Sam is a regular speaker at PEP Talk & PEGS, speaking publicly at multiple conferences. As an Angel Investor/Entrepreneur Sam has the ability to help companies grow/prepare to the next level.

 

Jay Goth is the Managing Partner of Forentis Fund, a biotech venture capital firm focused on precision medicine. He is a veteran entrepreneur, with experience in the hospitality, energy, finance and technology verticals. As a founding executive of Commonwealth Energy, Jay helped the company go from start-up to almost $500 million in revenues in five years, becoming the largest unregulated supplier of electricity and natural gas in the country when the company went public on the AMEX.

He serves as Executive Director of InSoCal CONNECT, a nonprofit that has structured mentorship and training programs for entrepreneurs, was a Senior Consultant with TriTech SBDC, one of seven technology designated Small Business Development Centers operating under the SBA, and served as an Entrepreneur in Residence at the University of California Riverside. Jay also serves on the board of directors for Credence Code Technologies, Inc., a company focused on blockchain development and implementation. He also serves on the board of Burble, a company that delivers the power of story through minimally defined immersive environments. Jay is on the board of directors for InSoCal CONNECT and Reach Out, nonprofits dedicated to improving lives in the Inland Empire.
